I swear it's not supposed to STILL be hurting this bad!!!

Almost 3 years ago I broke my tailbone. Can we say, OUCH! Surprisingly, I didn't cry when I did it, although I did almost pass out. My tailbone is DEFINITELY broken...broken IN at a 90 degree angle, which makes me a little bit nervous for when I have to deliver a baby (I'll let you fill in the details). I was still working at the law firm back then, sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day, and had the BIGGEST pillow I could find to sit on. I don't remember exactly how long it hurt for when I originally broke it, but that's another story.

About a year ago, I actually had to go see a doctor because my tailbone starting hurting like crazy again, maybe even worse than it did when I originally broke it. I was so reluctant to go to the doctor for it because what can you do for a broken tail bone? Pretty much nothing. But when I woke up in the middle of the night crying because it hurt so bad, and had to ask D for a blessing, that was the last straw for him. He made me go to the doctor. The doctor put me on some extremely heavy-duty anti-inflammatory drugs (because believe it or not, the tissue around your tailbone can swell), and it got better pretty quick.

Well, about a week ago, the pain came back about as bad as before, but I DON'T WANT TO GO TO THE DOCTOR FOR IT AGAIN!! The Tylenol I've been taking isn't doing squat to take the pain away. It doesn't hurt much if I'm standing for long periods of time. When I sleep, there really is no way for me to sleep on my back or my side, but I'm a tummy sleeper anyway. Then today, as I'm being the good maid of my house and scrubbing my floors on my hands and knees I hit my tailbone on the edge of the bathtub (remember, it's already been hurting for a week!), and I swear I would have cried or sworn if I felt like it would make it better.

When will this ever end?

Authentic Happiness

A much needed self-esteem booster!!

This is kind of fun if you want to get to know yourself a little better, and to help you recognize your positive personality strengths and maybe those pieces of your personality you can work on a little more. I did this for an assignment in one of my classes this semester, and I can't wait to take my positive psychology class in the fall!!

Click on the link here for the Authentic Happiness website, scroll down and click on VIA Signature Strengths Questionnaire. It will ask you to log in with a username and password, and then you'll take a questionnaire that's like 200 questions, but no worries...it goes pretty fast. When you finish the questionnaire it will give you your top strengths in order from 1 to 24. Here are my top 10, for any of you who care to venture a peek:
  1. Spirituality, Sense of Purpose, and Faith - You have strong and coherent beliefs about the higher purpose and meaning of the universe. You know where you fit in the large scheme. Your beliefs shape your actions and are a source of comfort to you.
  2. Capacity to Love and be Loved - You value close relations with others, in particular those in which sharing and caring are reciprocated. The people to whom you feel most close are the same people who feel most close to you.
  3. Gratitude - You are aware of the good things that happen to you, and you never take them for granted. Your friends and family members know that you are a grateful person because you always take the time to express your thanks.
  4. Honesty, Authenticity, and Genuineness - You are an honest person, not only by speaking the truth but by living your life in a genuine and authentic way. You are down to earth and without pretense; you are a "real" person.
  5. Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence - You notice and appreciate beauty, excellence, and/or skilled performance in all domains of life, from nature to art to mathematics to science to everyday experience.
  6. Bravery and Valor - You are a courageous person who does not shrink from threat, challenge, difficulty, or pain. You speak up for what is right even if there is opposition. You act on your convictions.
  7. Hope, Optimism, and Future-Mindedness - You expect the best in the future, and you work to achieve it. You believe that the future is something that you can control.
  8. Humor and Playfulness - You like to laugh and tease. Bringing smiles to other people is important to you. You try to see the light side of all situations.
  9. Zest, Enthusiasm, and Energy - Regardless of what you do, you approach it with excitement and energy. You never do anything halfway or halfheartedly. For you, life is an adventure.
  10. Fairness, Equity, and Justice - Treating all people fairly is one of your abiding principles. You do not let your personal feelings bias your decisions about other people. You give everyone a chance.
So there you have it. My top 10 personality strengths. Take it or leave it ;)
I thought it was kind of funny that my 24th strength was "Creativity, Ingenuity, Originality." If you know me, you know how NOT creative I am. I have high hopes and wishes to someday become creative and it's one my "weaknesses" I'm really going to work on over the years.

Whatta Weekend!!

It started off with D meeting me and McSweeney's at Olive Garden for a tasty dinner, and then swimming after that. We were hoping to sit in the hot tub too, but the hot tub was colder than the pool! Yuck! That plan was out, but it's okay...we had fun playing and splashing around in the pool.

Drum roll, please!!

On Saturday, I ran my first ever 5k!! D ran it too but he's done several in the past so it's not quite as exciting of an announcement for him :). This was a HUGE accomplishment for me, especially if you know me well and know everything I've gone through with my foot. But, no more excuses because it's been 4 1/2 years (WOW!!) since I've really had any complications or pain in my foot so it's about time I bucked up and finally did something like this. Thanks D for being my motivation and my inspiration!! You're the best!! I can't wait to do another one with you in June!

D came in 14th place with a time of 27:30, and I don't know what my placement was, but I beat my personal record and came in at a time of 33:14. It was pretty cold, and I wished I had brought gloves to wear, but at least it didn't rain on us like we thought it might!! The pictures are not attractive AT ALL, but we needed to document this momentous occasion so I'm willing to post not-so-attractive pictures of us :)

Still smiling :)
This is one of D's coworkers (Mr. Hunter) and his son, Dillan. Dillan is like 6, and was ahead of me for the first mile. Haha. Way to go, Dillan!!

After the 5k we went up to Layton for a couple of weddings. First was Shannell. Our moms are best friends, and we've known their family for almost 13 years; ever since the Powell's moved to the States from New Zealand. Congrats, Shannell!!

Next was my good friend from high school, TJ. I've known TJ since 1st grade and have tons of fun memories of our good times together. He finally married his sweetheart, June, after dating her for several years. I'm so happy for them both! Congrats TJ & June!!

Born Again American - Sorry, it's a long post

*Pause my music, then click on the song and listen to it while you read my post.

I love this song! How patriotic! Check out the official website here. We definitely need more of this in our struggling country right now. I also loved that they all sing about how we need more God in our hearts right now. Let me expand on my thoughts on that:

I've probably mentioned it before, but this semester I've been taking an Institute class on World Religions and the Gospel. My amazing institute teacher, Brother Longmore, kept emphasizing all semester long how he really feels that people of faith have a difficult time coming for them. (Not just members of the LDS Faith, but people of Faith in general.) I don't know if you've heard about a new "religion" (which it's not, but that's all I can think of to call it for lack of another word that's fitting for the group) called The New Atheism. I found their official website, you can click here for more info from their own group. I found it interesting that in the top right hand corner of their website they state:

"Intolerance of ignorance, myth and superstition; disregard for the tolerance of religion. Indoctrination of logic, reason and the advancement of a naturalistic worldview."

Also, not that I view Wikipedia as a reliable source, but I found this while searching for New Atheism: "New atheism is a form of atheism that takes a positive position on the non-existence of God. It is characterized by not just seeing religion as factually false, but destructive."

To me their saying they are intolerant of religion. That they're pushing God out of the picture and putting "logic and reason" in His stead. They're saying that belief in God is destructive. How sad to me. God is EVERYTHING!! It makes me soo sad when people can't see that. However, I also believe that people have the freedom to worship, or not worship, how they choose.

Article of Faith #11:
We clam the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may. -Joseph Smith to John Wentworth in the Wentworth Letter 1842

As people of Faith, we all need to stand up for our FAITH; no matter what our religion. Whether we're Muslim, Buddhist, Jewish, Baptist, Catholic, Mormon, or any other member of a religion of Faith, we need to link arms and stand together in the defense of God. Things are only going to get worse--let's buckle up and enjoy the ride :)

Also, I'm sure many of you have already heard about the controversy of Carrie Prejean, Miss California's answer in the Miss USA pageant in response to Perez Hilton's question to her on gay marriage. If you haven't, here's another clip. Way to go Miss California!!

And again, look at President Obama's answer on marriage:

Now, go and choose what you will do. Hopefully it will be to stand up in the defense of GOD and defense of the FAMILY!!

Me? A redneck?

Depends on how you look at it, I guess!

*This is from sitting outside studying for an hour yesterday. Nice, huh? Guess I'd better find my sunscreen!

I can change my mind, right?

So, after posting a month ago that we were going to make our blog private, and lots of thinking going on under this cap of mine, I eventually convinced myself that now is not the time to go private. It still makes me a bit nervous that random people find and look at our blog, but there are so many other people who read our blog that still want to keep tabs on us that I decided I don't want to make it a pain in the rear for them to keep coming back. So, for now we will keep our blog public. We'll probably make it private eventually, but for now, it will still be a no-hassle-job to keep up on our amazingly incredible Deming adventures ;)

P.S. Just for your "gee-whiz collection" (as D likes to say)--
Yesterday, I (Kiara) was nominated and elected as President of the Applied Behavioral Science Club at UVU. Here's to making my senior year of college even more hectic! WooHoo!

Easter Eggs, Funerals, and Food Poisoning

Easter Eggs:

Love this picture of R :)
She was soo into it! She loved it!
Don't mind me and D--we had just run more than 4 miles,
we're preparing to run a 5k on the 25th.
Our beautiful eggs :)
Thanks J, T, and R! We had a great time!
*Check out T's Blog for more pics*

Funerals:

In Loving Memory of Charles David McNamara Bradley
Charles David McNamara Bradley is the younger brother of our very good friend, Matt Bradley. Charles passed away in his sleep the night of April 3, 2009 due to a bad reaction to his medication. Charles was 25 years old, and leaves behind his beautiful fiancee, Bonnie.

D knew Charles much better than I did because he grew up with Matt and they often picked on Charles as little kids. But, even though I didn't know Charles very well, every time I saw him he always had a smile on his face--a smile that was contagious, and you couldn't help but smile when you saw him smiling back. He had such a wonderful, fun personality, and was always the first in line when someone needed help. Charles was a great brother, son, uncle, and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

D and I had the opportunity to attend Charles' funeral and traditional Irish wake (a celebration of the person's life) held in his honor last Thursday. We shed some tears, we laughed, and we remembered the life of Charles and the incredible person that he was. Charles is now with his Heavenly Father; and as his dad terrifically put it...he's needed on the other side of the veil because they're probably having a difficult time with the stubborn Irish Americans and need Charles' help to convert them ;)

Matt & Sandy, you are in our hearts and prayers as you struggle through this difficult trial, and others that have recently come your way. We love you!

Food Poisoning:

Friday night, D & I attended our monthly institute class--the last one of the semester. I always love going to listen the wonderful lessons that the instructors prepare, to eat good food, and have a fun, free date night with D.

Shortly after we ate our yummy dinner, we went back upstairs to listen to another speaker, and my tummy starting rumbling like crazy!! I could tell I was starting to not feel very well. Anyway, to make a long story short, Friday night was one of the worst nights of my life, but my ROCK STAR husband was right by my side every step of the way and was AMAZING!! He took SUCH good care of me (and always does), and I don't know what I would have done if I didn't have him with me. I have honestly never been so sick in my life--throwing up every hour from 11:30pm to 6:30am, and being so sick I nearly passed out. (Sorry if that's TMI) I wasn't able to eat anything all weekend, except maybe 7 Saltine crackers and a little bit of broth, so I missed out on all the yummy Easter goodies. I am feeling about 85% better now, but I'm still pretty hesitant to really eat much. Last night I finally felt like I had a little bit of an appetite again, but after eating a little bit of soup and crackers for dinner I regretted it, and it seems to continue to be the pattern--I feel pretty good and hungry enough to eat, then I eat and regret doing so. I must admit that it's nice to lose a few pounds I've been wanting to lose, but this was DEFINITELY NOT my idea of how I wanted to do it!! I hope you never have to go through food poisoning (if you haven't already)! It's awful!!

P.S. If you're wondering why I got sick and D didn't, we took our soup from different pans and that's the only difference we can pick out that makes sense as to why I got food poisoning and he didn't.

Smiles, Reminders and Enlightenment

D & I had the opportunity to babysit my cousin's three kids over Conference weekend. I don't think I got as much out of Conference as I usually do because I'm not used to having to entertain kiddos while trying to listen to the speakers at the same time. It was fun though and the kids were great. A couple of my favorite highlights from the weekend:

#1 - Abbie (age 3 1/2) and I had a little chat Friday night about how we were going to be able to listen to the Prophet speak on Saturday and Sunday. I told her his name, and the first time we saw him on Saturday I showed her who he was. Every time President Monson came on the screen Abbie would say: "Hey look! It's Thomas!"

#2 - Abbie was sure that D was either my daddy or my neighbor (despite my attempts to help her understand that he is my husband). Whenever she referred to D she'd say something like, "What's your daddy doing?" "When is your neighbor going to be done with his homework?" - Totally made me smile!

#3 - Getting to spend time with Benjamin (12 1/2) , Christopher (8 1/2), and Abbie because it's been quite a while since the last time we stayed with them for a weekend. It's amazing to see their progress and spend time hanging out with them.

#4 - Realizing once again how blessed I am to have such an amazing husband. I wasn't feeling very well over the weekend, but had extra responsibilities taking care of the kids, so D stepped it up and made sure I was comfortable and not too stressed out.

#5 - Listening to our Prophet and other leaders and being reminded again of how much improvement my life needs - but in a good way. I love listening to General Conference and coming out of it enlightened and determined to be a better person than I was before.

So what about the Mormons?

I know we have several people who look at our blog who are not members of the LDS Church. This one is for you guys. I came across this on YouTube and thought it was well said. Please ask if you have any questions!! Hopefully you recognize a few familiar faces of some "famous Mormons." The narrator's Irish accent just makes it THAT much better! :)

I love The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with all my heart. I know that it is true, because I have personally asked God and He has answered me. I know that Jesus Christ is my Savior and my Redeemer, and it is through Him that I will be able to live with my Heavenly Father and my family again, forever. I know the Book of Mormon is a true book because I know I feel God's spirit when I read it. I know that Joseph Smith was a Prophet of God and that through him, Heavenly Father restored His true Church on the Earth for the last time. I know that we have a living Prophet on the Earth, Thomas S. Monson, who leads and guides God's Church today.

3 Nephites Spotted on I-80

I got this in an e-mail from LDS Living yesterday :)

Mable Firstap was driving between Ohio and Pennsylvania when she spotted three clean-cut men walking on the side of the road.

“They just had a glow about them, so I didn’t mind stopping to see if they needed help,” said Firstap. “When I did, I saw that they were each carrying a Book of Mormon.”

Firstap told them that she was LDS. “They told me that I needed to get my food storage in order. Then they actually vanished! I couldn’t believe it!”

And neither should you.

The three Nephites, as we know from the Book of Mormon, exist, but Ms. Firstap doesn’t. Her name is a combination of today’s date and the month—April 1—April Fool’s Day.

Furthermore, while the three Nephites exist, their exploits have become the stuff of legend. In fact, William “Bert” Wilson, a real-life folklorist who specializes in LDS stories, has said that he has over 1500 stories about the three Nephites. (To clear things up, "folklore" stories are any stories passed orally - they include both myths and true events.)

“The story [of the three Nephites] emerges right from the account of the Book of Mormon, which opens the possibility that they’ll still be around today. It leads people to wonder, ‘Where are they? What are they doing?’ And strange or unusual occurrences naturally get chalked up to them, if it fits the pattern well enough,” said Eric Eliason, another LDS folklorist, and a professor of folklore and literature at BYU.

Exciting accounts of these three strangers are only part of a larger group of myths in LDS folklore, which include a story that British band U2 was once on the verge of conversion, that a Japanese bomber refused to bomb the Laie Hawaii Temple during the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and something about Yoda in “Star Wars” being modeled after Spencer W. Kimball.

“Stories are popular in any culture—part of the fundamental human need to tell stories that speak to our concerns and values,” said Eliason. “The LDS ones aren’t, in many ways, that much different from the stories that anybody else tells. But because of our own particular culture, we have our particular version of certain stories.”

The DVD "Mormon Myth-ellaneous" explores some of the best-known (and lesser-known) Mormon stories out there. Some are closer to truth than you might believe. And some, as you suspected, are completely ridiculous.

One story is told that Alice Cooper, world famous rocker, was raised LDS (with a father named Ether Moroni Furnier, it is believable). While not exactly true, Cooper’s family was part of The Church of Jesus Christ, an offshoot of the Church founded by Sidney Rigdon. His grandfather was even an apostle in that church.

As for the U2 and Laie myths, both are believed to be false, although no definite evidence exists to prove their falseness. Spencer W. Kimball as the model for Yoda is untrue, according to Nick Maley, the assistant model maker for Yoda.

But, when it comes to folklore, perhaps truthfulness or falseness shouldn’t matter so much. According to Eliason, we might be better served by looking at what it teaches us.

“I haven’t found anywhere where Jesus Himself makes clear whether the parables are true. I think we assume that they are stories—that there wasn’t necessarily an actual Samaritan. But He doesn’t say, which I think might be telling us something—that that’s not what’s important about them, whether or not they actually happened. But, by golly, that’s sure how a lot of people want to approach Mormon folklore, as if that’s the only important question to ask about them,” said Eliason.

He continued: “I think when we hear Mormon folklore, we should ask, Is the important thing about this story whether or not it was historically accurate, or is the important thing about it what it tells us about ourselves, our culture, and our values?”

So even if those stories about mysterious warnings from the three Nephites or about famous Latter-days Saints didn’t actually happen, they can still reveal a deeper principle. And they’re certainly still fun to hear.
