Lincoln City Sand Competition
We found out several months in advance that there was going to be a Sandcastle Contest in Lincoln City while we were visiting. A couple family members were super excited to participate and the rest of us were okay to watch :)
The morning of the competition we got up and headed to the bay at Mo's (a.k.a. Taft Beach) to scope out a better spot to try crabbing from the shore again because it was the last day of the fishing licenses we purchased, and with the hope of entering the competition as well. The entry fee consisted of donated canned goods, which was definitely manageable. Professionals were not allowed to participate.
It was a colder day that day, but I managed to get swim suits on our girls before we headed to the water. It was inevitable that they would end up in it. I was certainly happy to be bundled up though!
Half ready for chilly weather, half ready to play in the cold water. Haha!
Both of the days we tried crabbing from the shore, the girls really enjoyed chasing the seagulls away from the baited traps when they weren't in the water.
We appreciated when the sun came out! And the girls had fun playing with the jellyfish they found in the sand too :)
Once we were entered in for the competition, we staked out our ground and then had to come up with an idea. Haha!
Savannah got cold really quickly, and it was already nap time by the time the competition started, so she and I headed back to the beach house while everyone else stayed at the beach. Georgiana came up with the idea to sculpt the Sphinx, so that's what they did. Geo and Darwin were the master sculptors, Aurora was their cheerleader and Grandma and Grandpa were their supporters and cheerleaders as well. Andrea had gone home to pick up her husband, Sean, and they didn't make it back until after the competition was over, and Ryan hadn't joined us on the coast yet.
The masters at work
Aurora found various ways to entertain herself while the adults were occupied.
Starting to take shape :)
The finished product and the master sand sculptors. Nile River and all! :)
That's a nice looking sand Sphinx!
They caught a few crabs in the meantime while they were sculpting away. None of them were keepers though. Bummer.
Savannah and I joined back up with the rest of the fam after resting at the house for a few hours (she never even took a nap, stinker! But at least I was able to get started on dinner while we were home). When we got there, Aurora was trying to "sell Mud Pies" to everyone who walked past our group. Such a cutie! Most people just smiled at her as they passed, but one lady was a really great sport and traded her a piece of taffy for a mud pie and she even "ate" it! Aurora was thrilled! :) Thanks for making our little girl happy and feel special, whoever you were!
I was hoping to keep Savannah warm and dry, but it didn't last long. I just couldn't keep her from having fun at the beach! There was loud music playing for the competitors and Savannah danced her little heart out!
Such a happy girl!
Our family's sand sculpture didn't win a prize, but Darwin and Georgiana had a blast participating anyway! After the judges had come around, we took the chance to check out what other people had done.
This was the one created by the group next to us. When they showed up, our family felt like the underdogs. That group had like 15 people, they each had shovels, and a bunch of them had matching t-shirts. They were serious about this competition! It was kind of fun to watch them :)
In the sand they wrote "Who's watching who?"
On this side it says "Think they can see us?"
We liked this one.
This octopus is holding on to a couple of Despicable Me Minions :)
This castle won 1st prize in the castle category!
This "Lincoln City Bones" was my personal favorite
This one was really cool too! I think it won a prize.
My handsome hubby skipping a rock in the ocean :)
After the competition, we went back to the beach house to relax for a little bit. We were all pretty tuckered out at that point (and I wasn't even there for the whole thing!). Darwin and I got started on dinner (we made Rice and Lentils for everyone, delish!) and then we headed down to the beach for an evening stroll before the sun went down.
A view out the front door of the beach house
(the beach was out the back yard)
We were happy to have Uncle Sean join us, and Andrea was happy to have her hubby with her :)
Sitting on a log on the beach!
We love to just sit and watch the waves.
Thanks for another fun day, family!
