Thanks for the help

Thanks to everyone who has left helpful comments to my previous post so far. My friend, T, had a suggestion about naming specific things we're thinking about getting, but I didn't want to be specific at first to see what suggestions we would get. But, here's our list so far. Yes, it's small, but we're just starting our brainstorming:

  • Crib (We've both decided we don't want the baby sleeping in our room, but maybe it's not as practical as we think it will be)
  • Mattress
  • Crib blanket set with bar guard
  • Changing table (I kind of feel like I need one because I have a broken tailbone that is probably going to break again during delivery & will be pretty sore for a while so sitting more than necessary is not going to be the funnest thing in the world for me-i.e. sitting on the floor to change diapers)
  • Stroller/Car Seat Combo
  • Diaper Genie (several people have suggested we get a good one)
  • Breast pump (I am planning to breast feed, but people have still recommended getting a breast pump--should I get electric or hand pump?)
  • Swing
  • Rocker/Glider Chair for me (I picked out a nice comfy one I like since the baby won't be sleeping in our room I wanted a good chair to be in during nighttime feedings)
That's all I can think of at the moment. We really are pretty set on clothes thanks to all the hand-me-downs we've already received from my sisters and sister-in-law (thanks, ladies)! I guess right now we're mostly thinking about the big purchases and hoping to get tips on things we haven't really considered. Your comments have all been helpful, but keep them coming!! We are definitely novices when it comes to having a new born, so all comments are welcome :)

Good list. Diaper genie, total waste of money. Had one it was nice for the first month or so then it was so much better to just take the diapers out to the trash. Its sitting in storage if you want mine. It is the brand Diaper Genie. I am just going to toss it! :)

It sounds like you have a great list so far!

We have never let the baby sleep with us, and it's been fantastic!

I too have to agree with the diaper genie. We had one for a moment and then decided that a really cute garbage with a lid is far more practical. We keep it outside on the deck, it looks good and the house never smells like diapers!

I would definitely go with electric breast pump! Medela is by far my favorite ever! I was able to get in a full milk supply with natural supplements and using their pump-VERY amazing for an adoptive mother!

My very favorite gift was our recliner/rocker. I spend so much some there now reading stories and singing, and when Elle was tiny it made feeding/snuggle time so comfy. Best investment ever! Good luck! If you would be interested you are welcome to come and go through our baby stuff, and see if there is anything you would like/need. We have so much there is no way we'll use it all again!

I was actually going to say the same thing about the diaper genie... I never had one, but EVERYONE told me not to get one. ~Anyway, who knows??? But about the breast pump, I would FOR SURE get electric. I thought I would only pump for when there was a babysitter, or whatever, but I used it SO much more than that. I HATED BF in public (probably because I didnt practice at home with a cover, so Elle wasnt use to it.. I will for sure be bf in public with the next.. anyway) so I pumped ALL THE TIME. Even if you only use it once or twice a week.. think about it.. if you nurse for a year, that really adds up, and in my opinion, hand pumps are a pain. My hospital offered to rent one for a month at a time (you get new devices that actually go on you, its just the machine that you rent) anyway, I did that, as to see if I really wanted to invest in one, and within a few days of using the rented one, I knew I wanted to buy one. Anyway, something to look into if your hospital rents them out. Also, I would get a little bouncy wire chair too. They are like $15-$20 bucks and SAVED MY LIFE. I loved putting Elle in it while I showered or chores or just whatever. It gives them a little place to sit and a change from the swing. Mine vibrated and played music too.. and Elle LOVED it. She even slept in it sometimes at night when she wouldnt go in her crib. Anyway, hope this helps! I know its overwhelming.. but just think, you only have to do it once and then you're set for all your future kiddies! :o)

i agree with what people said on the other post about it being nice to have the baby in your room, at least for the first few months. i'd say to get/borrow a bassinet in case you decide to go that route. (plus studies have shown that babies that sleep in their parent's room the first six months have a lower risk of SIDS.) other things i loved having: a boppy, a bouncer, cute nursing cover, the stroller/car seat combo and a swing. and a rocking chair. DEFINITELY. sounds like you are right on track!

We've never had the baby sleep with us in our bed, but near us in the same room so I could hear him/her. I did that until they were only waking up once a night, then I move them into their own room. Buy a baby monitor! That's a must! A bouncer is a must for me too! Also, we could NEVER live without a Port-a-crib/Pack-n-Play! We take it EVERYWHERE! Then your baby gets used to sleeping at other places and not just it's own bed at home. It's a pain when they won't sleep other places.

I never thought I would be one to have my baby sleep in my room, but when he was waking up 3 times a night, it was so nice to just roll over, pull him out of the bassinet that was right next to our bed, nurse, and go right back to sleep. I was like a zombie if he wasn't in our room.

The best investment I made was with our 2nd child. We bought a co-sleeper, a little bassinet that folds up and sits right next to our bed. It was awesome. I could move it into his room for naps very easily. I loved it.

Ditto about the diaper genie. So stupid and then you buy all those dumb refills. I gave mine away. Another dumb invention - the wipes warmer. My husband insisted we buy one. What a waste!

Instead of a changing table, I used a pad on a dresser. Multifunctional and you don't kill your back.

Bouncers are a must- really cheap and a lifesaver! Something for you I would suggest are LilyPadz...they are reusable nursing pads that are way comfortable and don't move around! I ordered mine online from Target. They don't do much good until your milk gets all regulated, but then they are really nice to have.

So much good advice! I too ended up NOT using the diaper genie... The bouncy seat IS a life saver. And I just put all of my babies in their carseats to sleep in beside my bed the first few months... It leaves them upright a little... And a DEFINITE on the pack-n-play.

If you want, just ask for gift cards in leui (?) of gifts, but make sure you let people know it's because you need BIG items and NOT because you dont' trust their taste in baby clothes. :)

Baby in your room for the first 2 months is nice. After that, everyone needs their own space! A bassinet is perfect for putting her in your room. I don't like diaper genies. I LOVE changing tables! You might also want a baby monitor.

Thanks for the list. Its funny how almost everyone's comments are about the same. Diaper Genie-We too found it was just an expensive garbage can. We ALWAYS had extra bags from the grociery store, so we still just wrap them in those before putting them in the garbage can.

Sorry, I'm still against the changing table. They are WAY to expensive for how often you use them!

Stroller/Car Seat Combo-I already voiced my opinion, but LOVE how easy they are!

Breast Pump- TOTALLY get one, but places rent them. Art City Pharmacy(where I use to work) I know rents them. You have to buy your own kit(which has all the parts that touch you and the milk, so totally sanitary-and you keep it after)

Rocker- TOTALLY!!

Crib, Mattress, and blanket set- Crib and mattress are a yes, blanket set, not needed but makes it look cuter!

I do agree with a bouncer. Its nice when you want to shower or something and can easily pull it in with you, and some babies don't like a swing........ umm our swing is at my parents house! USE IT!!!! If you want one of your own, use mine first to see if your kid even likes it!!!

See what you can borrow. Little babies tend to change what they like. So yeah, also just have a bassinet aviable to borrow just in case you change your mind. Then you won't have to buy one.

Port a crib is nice, but not really NEEDED until a little later!

Save your money, and good luck with your decisions!! They get expensive REALLY quick!!!

I would look on craigslist or at D.I. for a changing table. I found one at D.I. for $15 and I just painted it and it works great. I like the changing table. I don't use a diaper genie, I just have a waste basket with a lid on it and I throw the dirty diapers outside. I would definitely borrow a bassinet for the first 6 weeks or so. I am totally against having the baby sleep in the room with me, but for the first few weeks it is a lot easier. A lot of the stuff you can get for almost new if you look on craigslist or something like that. Also, and the big items, I'd get gender neutral stuff so that you can use it for all of your kids.

We got a pack 'n play that has a bassinet you can take on and off. Brooklyn slept in our room in that for the first 3 months and it was really nice for those middle of the night feedings. It seems like most everything has been mentioned. I just barely got an electric pump after using a manual one this whole time. I haven't had to pump very often but the manual one definitely got old. I would suggest a bumbo for when the baby gets a little older. It was so nice when Brooklyn wasn't quite sitting up on her own but wanted to be up all the time. She absolutely loves it! Good luck with all the decisions!

I"m pretty much with everyone else on the diaper genie. If you're spending the money on a changing table, you could just get a cute dresser and put a changing table pad (with straps/or curved sides) on top so you can use the dresser later. I don't use my changing table very often at all...but I could see why you would want something instead of sitting.
We just have a port a crib to put the baby in for the first few monts while they're in our room. I keep them in our room until they are sleeping through the night (or up only once) it's been nice and the port a crib is used ALL THE TIME when we go places. I love having it.
Lily padz...I wouldn't use them until your milk supply is completely regulated. (for me that's around 4 months) I can give you more details as to why later.
Another great item is the book - On Becoming Babywise. You can take his ideas and adapt them to what is best for your family.
Also:
Sling/baby carrier (I am loving my Seven Sling, I also have the baby bjorn, but if you get one of those I suggest getting the one that has the extra back support around your waist, my back kills afte about 3 minutes with Ryder, who is only 10 lbs)
Nursing cover
Boppy
Good luck! I'll come back and leave more suggestions as I think of them.
