July 29, 2016 - Denver Zoo
This was the last full day of our trip before heading back home. We planned to take the kids to the Denver Zoo in the morning so Darwin could attend a couple more sessions of the conference in the afternoon. We were a little naive about the size of the Denver Zoo before we went. Needless to say, we spent most of the day at the zoo and Darwin didn't end up getting to go back to the conference. Sorry, honey! But we're so glad we had the time together as a family. So worth it! Be prepared for lots of pictures of animals! The Denver Zoo is huge!
The first cute little animal we saw when we entered. I'm not sure what it's called though.
Measuring their hands :)
A couple of hyenas
This lego lion was really awesome and definitely impressive!
There were bronze statues all over the zoo. This little dung beetle statue made us laugh :)
I was impressed that so many of the animals were awake and active! It seems like the animals at our zoo are never this active when we go.
We love zebras!
The peacocks are so beautiful, and they were so close!
Savy and the peacock watched each other for a while.
She wanted to go pet it :)
So pretty!
Giraffes are so huge!
Honey bees are always a welcome site for our family :)
Waiting for a sea lion show to start.
This squirrel was pretty awesome! I've never seen one like it!
Pretty green tree frogs.
Can you see the snake?
How about this one? ;)
This was the biggest puffer fish I have ever seen--It's up by Savy's hand.
It was HUGE!
**Side note: We missed taking a bunch of pictures in the aquarium area of the zoo because we ran out of memory space on our SD card. Daddy left us for a few minutes to get a new ridiculously priced SD card from the gift shop. I guess it was worth it since we weren't prepared and had just started our visit to the zoo. We were grateful the gift shop had SD cards available!**
Talmage got hungry so I took a break to feed him while Daddy took the girls to see some more animals, like this big polar bear!
Aurora liked to be the navigator and held on to the map for most of our zoo visit.
The girls really loved the big cats area.
Rori hanging out with some bear cubs :)
Some sleepy camels
Okapi
It was really fun to watch this elephant. We got to watch it go into the water.
And it played around with a big log for a while.
The girls thought it was hilarious that it pooped in the water :)
Lifting the log out of the water. I was glad we got to see some of the animals out and about and so active!
Not sure what this thing is called, but it's pretty!
(Darwin says it's called a bongo.)
A rhino
The girls were excited to see a hippo. We looked around for the hippo for a while and they were so happy when we finally found it!
Talmage and I missed out on going into the bird exhibit because he was sleeping in the stroller and strollers weren't allowed in that area, so Darwin graciously took lots of pictures of the cool birds so I wouldn't feel left out. He's such a sweetheart!
These penguins were actually outside the bird exhibit so I got to see them. The girls had a lot of fun watching the penguins.
This eagle is gorgeous!
A couple of pretty parrots.
And then there were a bunch that I have no idea what their names are, but they are very pretty and unique!
This one is really cool. It's called a bleeding heart dove.
Pretty colors!
I wonder about some of God's creations sometimes. I'm still trying to figure out what the purpose of the top part of it's bill is for. Anyone know?
The girls came out of the bird section telling me all about the birds sleeping while standing on one leg. Now that's talent! ;)
Testing out their leaping ability. I love this shot!
Then it was Savy's turn :)
We got to see a big flock of flamingos. Cool birds.
Sleepy hogs.
The girls had a blast beating on these drums. It was hard to pull them away!
Aurora cracks me up! Getting cozy with a gorilla statue :)
Love this girl!
The gorillas were neat to watch too. There was a mom with a baby!
Look at how cute that baby is!
The orangutans were pretty cool too. I love their shaggy hair :)
We watched this one climb up the tree and get cozy on a big branch.
Savy wants to join the orangutan society ;)
Rori wants to join too!
Our kids make pretty good monkeys. I think they'd fit right in! ;)
This one is so tiny!
Pretty sweet mustache on the emperor tamarin!
A cute little elephant shrew. Darwin thinks he wants one as a pet :)
I love the golden tamarin's hair color!
A red ruffed lemur
This exhibit was closed because one of the glass walls was shattered. Someone said one of the primates did it. Oops!
These bears were super fun to watch. They were a bit grumpy with each other. We had to stay and watch in case they got too mean. There was a bit of a crowd around these guys.
This one had an itchy back. It kept coming back to this spot on the wall to try and get a good scratch.
Getting a bit more grumpy!
On our way out we caught a little animal presentation. We learned a lot about this Eurasian eagle-owl and a ball python, which we didn't get any pictures of, but it looked just like the one Daddy has at work.
This big fish was entirely made of recycled materials.
Look at those monkeys! ;)
We were going to ask someone to take a picture of our whole family together by the Denver Zoo sign, but Savannah got hurt (she got hit by the turning handle on one of those coin flattening machines), so a family picture was the last thing she wanted to do at that moment.
We were so glad we made the trip to the Denver Zoo! We got there around 10 AM and stayed until around 4 PM and we still didn't see everything there was to see. What a fun zoo! It was definitely worth the trip.
